Solar-powered laptops and smartphones that work offline are set to be a reality with the Amrita Centre for Nanosciences in Kochicoming out with the world’s first integrated solar storage tile using a super capacitor, named ‘Amrita Smart’.

The product was launched at NANOSOLAR 2012, the first international workshop on nanotechnology in solar and energy storage applications here on Friday.

The product has been developed by a team of 40 researchers led by Dr. Shanti Nair and Dr.Vinod Gopal.

The specialty of Amrita Smart is that it is a combination of solar conversion and electricity storage in a single device that can be used to power mobile phones and laptops even at night and also offline.

The patented concept uses special electronics to integrate the solar cell with the storage device.

The solar modules, when exposed to the sun for four hours, can charge laptops and mobile phones in two hours and have seven days storage capacity. It weighs 200 gms and is likely to be marketed in two years.

Dr. Shanti Nair said development of solar storage tile was a milestone in nanosolar aided research and renewable energy sector.
